"Indeed, those who conceal what We have sent down of the clear proofs and guidance"—they are the People of the Scripture; they concealed [the truth about] Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Islam. "Those are cursed by Allah and cursed by those who curse." The interpretation of al-Kalbi, from Abu Salih, from Ibn Abbas who said: When a disbeliever is carried upon his bier, his soul and his body say: 'Woe to you! Where are you taking me?' When he is placed in his grave and his companions depart from him, Munkar and Nakir come to him; their voices are like crashing thunder, and their eyes are like flashing lightning. They furrow the earth with their fangs and tread upon their hair. They make him sit up, then they say to him: 'Who is your Lord?' He says: 'I do not know.' It is said to him: 'May you not know.' Then they say to him: 'What is your religion?' He says: 'I do not know.' It is said to him: 'May you not know.' Then they say to him: 'Who is your Prophet?' He says: 'I do not know.' It is said to him: 'May you not know; that is how you were in the world.' Then a door is opened for him toward Paradise, and he looks at it. It is said to him: 'This is the Paradise to which, had you believed in Allah and affirmed His Messenger, you would have arrived; you shall never see it.' Then a door is opened for him toward the Fire, and it is said to him: 'This is the Fire to which you are headed.' Then it is tightened upon him.
