"And among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals," meaning: peers whom they equate with Him, that is, they worship them. "They love them as they [should] love Allah," like the love the believers have for Allah. "But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah" than the polytheists are for their idols. "And if only those who have wronged"—meaning: those who committed polytheism—"could see when they see the punishment," that is, [you] will see them when they enter the Fire; and there they will realize that "the power"—the ability—"belongs to Allah entirely," even if they were heedless of the power and might of Allah while in the world.
