"In their hearts is a disease," Al-Hasan said: meaning, doubt. "So Allah increased them in disease" by sealing their hearts. "And for them is a painful punishment," agonizing in the Hereafter, "because they used to lie," in their hearts, according to the recitation of those who read it with the doubling (tashdid), and for those who read it with the lightened (takhfif) form "yakdhibun" (they lie), it means: in their saying, "We believe," while their hearts remain upon disbelief. [Verse 11-15]
﴿فِي قُلُوبهم مرض﴾ قَالَ الحَسَن: يَعْنِي: شكًّا ﴿فَزَادَهُمُ الله مَرضا﴾ بالطبع على قُلُوبهم ﴿وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيم﴾ موجع فِي الْآخِرَة ﴿بِمَا كَانُوا يُكَذِّبُونَ﴾ بقلوبهم فِي قِرَاءَة من قَرَأَهَا بالتثقيل، وَمن قَرَأَهَا بِالتَّخْفِيفِ ((يكذبُون)) يَعْنِي: فِي قَوْلهم: آمنا؛ وَقُلُوبهمْ على الْكفْر.
