The Prophet (peace be upon him) remained silent, then this verse was revealed. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him: "Shave it, fast for three days, or feed a faraq (measure) to six people, or sacrifice a sheep."
Yahya said: The faraq is three sa's; one sa' for every two people. "Whoever performs 'Umrah during the Hajj months" means whoever enters into the state of ihram for 'Umrah during the months of Hajj—in Shawwal, Dhu al-Qi'dah, or Dhu al-Hijjah—and then performs Hajj in that same year, he is a mutamatti' (one performing tamattu') and upon him is what is available of the sacrificial animal. If he does not find one, he fasts three days during the Hajj.
Malik ibn Anas, from al-Zuhri, from Salim ibn 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar, from his father, who said: "From the day he enters into ihram until the day of 'Arafah; if he misses that, he fasts the days of Mina."
