"And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life"—and he is the hypocrite who confesses faith openly—"and he calls Allah to witness as to what is in his heart"—regarding the disbelief and denial of what he confessed openly—"yet he is the fiercest of opponents," meaning: he is a liar in his speech.
﴿وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يُعْجِبُكَ قَوْلُهُ فِي الْحَيَاة الدُّنْيَا﴾ وَهُوَ الْمُنَافِق الَّذِي يقر بِالْإِيمَان فِي الْعَلَانِيَة ﴿وَيُشْهِدُ اللَّهَ عَلَى مَا فِي قلبه﴾ من الْكفْر والجحود بِمَا أقرّ بِهِ فِي الْعَلَانِيَة ﴿وَهُوَ أَلَدُّ الْخِصَام﴾ أَي: كَاذِب فِي القَوْل
