"Ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We gave them." Al-Hasan's interpretation: Meaning what Allah saved them from regarding the kin of Pharaoh, the shading over them with clouds, and other such things. We gave them clear signs of guidance, making clear to them the guidance versus disbelief. "And whoever alters the favor of Allah after it has come to him"—He says: They altered that, and they adopted Judaism and Christianity—"then indeed, Allah is severe in penalty." He informs that His retribution will be severe against the Jews and the Christians who altered the religion of Allah.
﴿سل بني إِسْرَائِيل كَمَا آتَيْنَاهُم من آيَة بَيِّنَة﴾ تَفْسِير الحَسَن: يَعْنِي: مَا نجاهم اللَّه من آل فِرْعَوْن، وظلل عَلَيْهِم الْغَمَام وَغير ذَلِكَ، وآتيناهم بَيِّنَات من الْهدى، بَين لَهُم الْهدى من الْكفْر ﴿وَمَنْ يُبَدِّلْ نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَتْهُ﴾ يَقُولُ: بدلُوا ذَلِكَ، وَاتَّخذُوا الْيَهُودِيَّة والنصرانية ﴿فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ﴾ أخبر أَنَّهُ ستشتد نقمته على الْيَهُود وَالنَّصَارَى الَّذين بدلُوا دين الله.
