"And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe; and a believing slave woman" whom a Muslim marries, if he does not have the means (tawl), "is better than a polytheist woman, even though she might please you." Then, the prohibition of polytheistic women from the People of the Scripture was abrogated in Surah al-Ma'idah, and He permitted them, saying: "And chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you." Chaste women (al-muhsanat) in this verse mean free women. "And do not marry polytheistic men until they believe"; so Allah prohibited for a Muslim woman to be married by anyone who is a polytheist.
