"There is no compulsion in the religion; the right path has become distinct from error." The explanation of Sa'id ibn Jubayr: He said: Some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) had their children nursed by Jews during the Pre-Islamic period, and they grew up upon Judaism. When Islam came and the fathers accepted Islam, they wanted to compel their children to accept Islam. Then Allah revealed: "There is no compulsion in the religion; the right path has become distinct from error," meaning: guidance from misguidance. "So whoever rejects the Taghut (false deities/Satan)," meaning: Satan, "and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold; there is no breaking for it," meaning: there is no severance for it.
﴿لَا إِكْرَاهَ فِي الدِّينِ قَدْ تبين الرشد من الغي﴾ تَفْسِير سَعِيد بْن جُبَيْر: قَالَ: كَانَ قوم من أَصْحَاب النَّبي عليه السلام استرضعوا أَوْلَادهم فِي الْيَهُود فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّة، فكبروا على الْيَهُودِيَّة؛ فَلَمَّا جَاءَ الْإِسْلَام، وَأسلم الْآبَاء، أَرَادوا أَن يكرهوا أَبْنَاءَهُم عَلَى الإِسْلام فَأنْزل اللَّه: ﴿لَا إِكْرَاهَ فِي الدِّينِ قَدْ تَبَيَّنَ الرُّشْدُ مِنَ الغي﴾ يَعْنِي: الْهدى من الضَّلَالَة ﴿فَمَنْ يكفر بالطاغوت﴾ بالشيطان ﴿وَيُؤْمِنْ بِاللَّهِ فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَى لَا انْفِصَامَ لَهَا﴾ أَي: لَا انْقِطَاع لَهَا.
