"Have you not considered the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord [merely] because Allah had given him kingship?" The one who argued with Abraham about his Lord is Namrud (Nimrod), according to the interpretation of Qatadah. Qatadah said: He was the first king to act arrogantly on earth, and he is the owner of the tower [which was built] in Babylon. "When Abraham said, 'My Lord is the one who gives life and causes death,'" Qatadah said: It was mentioned to us that Namrud called for two men; he killed one of them and spared the other. Then he said: "I give life and cause death"; meaning: I spare whom I will, and I kill whom I will. "Abraham said, 'Indeed, Allah brings the sun from the east, so bring it from the west.' So the disbeliever was overwhelmed [by confusion]." Muhammad said: This means: his argument was refuted. "And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people," meaning: the polytheists who encounter Allah with their polytheism, i.e., He does not guide them to the proof, nor does He guide them from misguidance to His religion.
