"Or like the one who passed by a town." Muhammad said: The meaning is: Have you seen the like of this, or [what happened to] the one who passed by a town? [This is] in the manner of wonder. "While it had fallen down upon its roofs." Muhammad said: He means, while it was ruined upon its roofs, and the basis of that is that the roofs collapse, then the walls fall upon them. "He said: How will Allah bring this to life after its death?" Qatada said: He is Uzayr, and the town is Jerusalem after Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed it, so he said: How will this be repopulated after its destruction? "So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then He resurrected him. He said: How long have you remained? He said: I have remained a day or part of a day." It was mentioned to us that he died in the forenoon and was resurrected before sunset, so he said: "I have remained a day," then he turned and saw a remainder of the sun from that day, so he said: "Or part of a day." "He said: Rather, you have remained a hundred years; so look at your food and your drink; it has not changed." That is: It has not altered. Al-Kalbi said: He had with him two baskets: a basket of figs and a basket of grapes, and a skin containing juice. "And look at your donkey." He looked at his donkey and it was but decaying bones. He saw the bones move and some of them race toward others, and the head came to its place; then he saw the nerves and veins being cast upon it, then the flesh was placed upon it, then the skin was stretched over it, then the soul was blown into it; so it was standing there braying. Uzayr fell down in prostration. "He said: I know that Allah is over all things competent."
