And they did not seek reward for it. "They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps for fear of death." This refers to their aversion to Jihad. "And Allah is encompassing of the disbelievers," meaning: He is behind them, until He disgraces them for their disbelief.
وَلم يحتسبوا أجرهَا ﴿يَجْعَلُونَ أَصَابِعَهُمْ فِي آذَانِهِمْ مِنَ الصَّوَاعِقِ حَذَرَ الْمَوْت﴾ وَهَذَا كَرَاهِيَة للْجِهَاد ﴿وَاللَّهُ مُحِيطٌ بالكافرين﴾ أَي: هُوَ من ورائهم؛ حَتَّى (يخزيهم) بكفرهم.
