"And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant"—meaning: Muhammad—"then produce a surah the like thereof"—meaning: like this Quran—"and call upon your witnesses other than Allah"—so that they may testify that it is like it—"if you should be truthful"—that this Quran is not from the speech of Allah.
﴿وَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ فِي رَيْبٍ مِمَّا نزلنَا على عَبدنَا﴾ يَعْنِي: مُحَمَّدًا ﴿فَأْتُوا بِسُورَةٍ مِنْ مثله﴾ أَي: من مثل هَذَا الْقُرْآن ﴿وَادْعُوا شُهَدَاءَكُمْ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ﴾ فيشهدوا أَنه مثله ﴿إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقين﴾ بِأَن هَذَا الْقُرْآن لَيْسَ من كَلَام الله
