"And he shall speak to the people in the cradle," meaning: in his mother's lap, "and in maturity," meaning: when he is fully grown. "And He will teach him," meaning: He will teach him when he is fully grown. She wanted to know how that would be, so she said: "My Lord, how shall I have a son when no man has touched me? He said: Thus does Allah create what He wills."
﴿ويكلم النَّاس فِي المهد﴾ أَي: فِي حِجْرِ أُمِّهِ ﴿وَكَهْلا﴾ كَبِيرا ﴿وَيُعَلِّمُهُمْ﴾ أَي: يعلمهُمْ كَبِيرا؛ فَأَرَادَتْ أَن تعلم كَيفَ ذَلِك؛ فَقَالَت: ﴿رَبِّ أَنَّى يَكُونُ لِي وَلَدٌ وَلَمْ يَمْسَسْنِي بَشَرٌ قَالَ كَذَلِكِ اللَّهُ يَخْلُقُ مَا يَشَاءُ﴾
