Qatada said: We were told that a qintar is one hundred rotls of gold, or eighty thousand [dirhams] of silver. "And among them is he who, if you entrust him with a dinar, he will not return it to you unless you are constantly standing over him"—meaning: if you ask him for it at the time you give it to him, he returns it to you, but if you wait for him regarding it for a few days, he makes off with it. "That is because they say, 'There is no way [i.e., no sin] upon us concerning the unlettered [i.e., the idolaters of the Arabs].'" The interpretation of al-Hasan: They used to say, 'These rights were only theirs and became binding upon us while they were upon their religion, but when they turned away from their religion, no right remained for them upon us.' Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: "And they speak lies about Allah while they know [that they are lying]."
قَالَ قَتَادَة: كُنَّا نُحدث أَن القنطار مائَة رَطْل من ذهب، أَو ثَمَانُون ألفا من الْوَرق. ﴿وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ إِنْ تَأْمَنْهُ بِدِينَارٍ لَا يُؤَدِّهِ إِلَيْكَ إِلا مَا دمت عَلَيْهِ قَائِما﴾ يَعْنِي: إِن سَأَلته حِين تعطيه إِيَّاه رده إِلَيْك، وَإِن أنظرته بِهِ أَيَّامًا ذهب بِهِ. ﴿ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَالُوا لَيْسَ عَلَيْنَا فِي الْأُمِّيين﴾ يعنون: مُشْركي الْعَرَب ﴿سَبِيل﴾ إِثْم. تَفْسِير الْحسن: كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ: إِنَّمَا كَانَت لَهُم هَذِه الْحُقُوق وَتجب علينا وهم على دينهم، فَلَمَّا تحولوا عَن دينهم لم يثبت لَهُم علينا حق. قَالَ الله ﷿: ﴿وَيَقُولُونَ عَلَى الله الْكَذِب وهم يعلمُونَ﴾ أَنهم كاذبون
