"Those who break the covenant of Allah after its binding," which is the covenant that was taken from them in the loin of Adam, and its explanation is in Surat Al-A'raf. "And sever what Allah has ordered to be joined," Ibn Abbas said: Meaning, what Allah has commanded regarding belief in all the prophets. "And cause corruption on earth," meaning: they act upon it through polytheism and disobedience. "It is they who are the losers," they have lost their own souls such that they would not gain them, and thus they would have ended up in Paradise; instead, they have ended up in the Fire. [Verses 28-29]
﴿الَّذِينَ يَنْقُضُونَ عَهْدَ اللَّهِ مِنْ بعد ميثاقه﴾ وَهُوَ الْمِيثَاق الَّذِي أَخذ عَلَيْهِم فِي صلب آدم، وَتَفْسِيره فِي سُورَة الْأَعْرَاف ﴿وَيَقْطَعُونَ مَا أَمَرَ اللَّهُ بِهِ أَن يُوصل﴾ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاس: يَعْنِي: مَا أَمر اللَّه بِهِ من الْإِيمَان بالنبيين كلهم ﴿وَيُفْسِدُونَ فِي الأَرْضِ﴾ أَي يعْملُونَ فِيهَا بالشرك والمعاصي ﴿أُولَئِكَ هم الخاسرون﴾ خسروا أنفسهم أَنْ يغنموها فيصيروا فِي الْجَنَّةِ؛ فصاروا فِي النَّار.
