Yahya said: The Quran cannot be known except by one who knows two qualities: the Meccan and the Medinan, the abrograting and the abrogated, the preceding and the succeeding, the separated and the connected, the specific and the general, the implicit, and the Arabic language.

Muhammad said: Everything I have transmitted from the book of Yahya, my father (may Allah have mercy on him) informed me of it, from Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn al-Hasan, from Abu Dawud Ahmad ibn Musa, from Yahya ibn Salam.

Among it is that which my father narrated to me, from Abu al-Hasan, from Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Salam, from his father, from his grandfather. Everything I have included via the path of Yahya ibn Muhammad, I have stated that it is by way of the (hadith) of Yahya ibn Muhammad.

I ask Allah for help, support, guidance, and correctness; there is no god but He, He is the Doer of what He wills.
