seventy nations; you are the best and most noble of them to Allah." "And if the People of the Book had believed, it would have been better for them"; meaning: all of them. Then He said: "Among them are believers"; meaning: those among them who believed, "and most of them are the defiantly disobedient"; meaning: the disobedience of polytheism (Shirk).
سَبْعِينَ أُمَّةً، أَنْتُمْ خَيْرُهَا وَأَكْرَمُهَا عَلَى اللَّهِ)). ﴿وَلَوْ آمَنَ أَهْلُ الْكتاب لَكَانَ خيرا لَهُم﴾ يَعْنِي: عامتهم، ثمَّ قَالَ: ﴿مِنْهُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ﴾ يَعْنِي: من آمن مِنْهُم ﴿وَأَكْثَرُهُمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ﴾ يَعْنِي: فسق الشّرك.
