"And He taught Adam the names, all of them; then He presented them to the angels." Mujahid said: Allah created Adam in the final hours of the day on Friday, after He had created all of creation.
Al-Kalbi said: Then He taught him the names of all created beings in Syriac, the first language, as a secret from the angels. Then Allah gathered all the beasts, predators, birds, and what He had spread upon the earth. Then He said to the angels: "Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful." They said: "Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing, the Wise." He said: "O Adam, inform them..."
﴿وَعَلَّمَ آدَمَ الأَسْمَاءَ كُلَّهَا ثُمَّ عرضهمْ على الْمَلَائِكَة﴾ قَالَ مُجَاهِد: خلق اللَّه آدم آخر سَاعَات النَّهَار من يَوْم الْجُمُعَة بعد مَا خلق الْخلق كلهم.
قَالَ الْكَلْبِيّ: ثمَّ علمه أَسمَاء الْخلق [كلهم] بالسُّرْيَانيَّة اللِّسَان الأول سرًّا من الْمَلَائِكَة، ثمَّ حشر اللَّه الدَّوَابّ كلهَا، وَالسِّبَاع وَالطير وَمَا ذَرأ فِي الأَرْض، ثمَّ قَالَ للْمَلَائكَة: (أَنْبِئُونِي بِأَسْمَاءِ هَؤُلاءِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ قَالُوا سُبْحَانَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِلا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَلِيمُ الْحَكِيمُ قَالَ يَا آدم أنبئهم
