And the meaning of 'Or He may forgive them' is that they return to faith, 'or punish them' by their persistence in polytheism.
وَمعنى: ﴿أَو يَتُوب عَلَيْهِم﴾ يرجعُونَ إِلَى الْإِيمَان ﴿أَوْ يُعَذِّبَهُمْ﴾ بإقامتهم على الشّرك.
