"O you who have believed, do not consume usury, [doubled and multiplied]" (Quran 3:130). In the Pre-Islamic era, if a debt owed by one person to another became due, the creditor would demand payment, and the debtor would say: "Delay [the payment for] me, and I will increase you [in the amount]."
