polytheism. "And their refuge is the Fire," meaning: their destination is the Fire. "And wretched is the residence of the wrongdoers," the dwelling of the polytheistic wrongdoers. "And Allah had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them by His permission." The explanation of al-Hasan and others is: [when] you were killing them.
Muhammad said: It is said: 'a husus year' when it destroys everything, and 'mahsus locusts' when the cold kills them. "Until when you lost courage," the verse. Al-Hasan said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "I saw myself last night as if I were wearing a sturdy coat of mail. I interpreted it as Medina. So lie in ambush for the polytheists in its alleys until they enter upon you in its alleys, then you shall kill them." The Ansar refused that and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we protected our city from Tubba' and the armies, so shall we leave it open for these polytheists to enter it?" Then the Messenger of Allah wore his armor. When they left him, they turned to one another and said: "What have we done? The Messenger of Allah suggested something to us, and we rejected his opinion." So they came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we will lie in ambush for them in its alleys until they enter, then we shall kill them within it." He said: "It is not fitting for a Prophet to put down his armor once he has put it on until he fights." He said: So the Messenger of Allah spent the night without them, and he saw a vision. He woke up and said: "I saw last night as if cows were being slaughtered, and I said: 'Cows!' and Allah is the best [of observers], and it means that a calamity will occur among you, and you will meet them and defeat them tomorrow; so when you defeat them, do not pursue those who are fleeing."
الشّرك ﴿ومأواهم النَّار﴾ أَي: مصيرهم إِلَى النَّار ﴿وَبِئْسَ مثوى الظَّالِمين﴾ منزل الظَّالِمين الْمُشْركين ﴿وَلَقَدْ صَدَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ وَعْدَهُ إِذْ تَحُسُّونَهُمْ بِإِذْنِهِ﴾ تَفْسِير الْحسن وَغَيره: [إِذا] تقتلونهم.
قَالَ مُحَمَّد: يُقَال: سنة حسوس؛ إِذا أَتَت على كل شَيْء، وجراد محسوس؛ إِذا قَتله الْبرد. ﴿حَتَّى إِذا فشلتم﴾ الْآيَة، قَالَ الْحسن: قَالَ رَسُول اللَّهِ ﷺ: ((رَأَيْتنِي البارحة؛ كَأَن عليَّ درعا حَصِينَة، (فَأَوَّلتهَا﴾ الْمَدِينَة، فأكمِنوا للْمُشْرِكين فِي أزقتها حَتَّى يدخلُوا عَلَيْكُم فِي أزقتها؛ فتقتلوهم. فَأَبت الْأَنْصَار من ذَلِك فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُول الله، منعنَا مدينتنا من تبع والجنود فنخلي بَين هَؤُلَاءِ الْمُشْركين وَبَينهَا يدْخلُونَهَا؟ ﴿فَلَيْسَ رَسُول الله سلاحه، فَلَمَّا خَرجُوا من عِنْده أقبل بَعضهم على بعض، فَقَالُوا: مَا صنعنَا؛ أَشَارَ علينا رَسُول الله، فَرددْنَا رَأْيه، فَأتوهُ فَقَالُوا: يَا رَسُول الله، نكمن لَهُم فِي أزقتها؛ حَتَّى يدخلُوا فنقتلهم فِيهَا؛ فَقَالَ: إِنَّه لَيْسَ لبني لبس لأمته - أَي: سلاحه - أَن يَضَعهَا؛ حَتَّى (يُقَاتل) قَالَ: فَبَاتَ رَسُول الله دونهم بليلة؛ فَرَأى رُؤْيا، فَأصْبح فَقَالَ: إِنِّي رَأَيْت البارحة كَأَن بقرًا ينْحَر، فَقلت: بقر﴾ وَالله خير، وَإنَّهُ كائنة فِيكُم مُصِيبَة، وَإِنَّكُمْ ستلقونهم وتهزمونهم غَدا؛ فَإِذا هزمتموهم فَلَا تتبعوا المدبرين))
