Translation · EN

[Verse 153]: "When you were running and did not look back at anyone, while the Messenger was calling you from your rear, so Allah repaid you with distress upon distress." He means the distress of being defeated, followed by the distress of hearing that the Messenger of Allah had been killed. "So that you may not grieve for what has escaped you," of the spoils, "nor for that which has befallen you" of injury and defeat. "And Allah is well-acquainted with what you do." [Verse 154]: "Then He sent down upon you after the distress a sense of security, slumber overtaking a party of you," meaning the believers who were firm in their faith. "While another party was worried about themselves," these were the hypocrites; they were not concerned with the Prophet, but only with their own lives. "Thinking about Allah other than the truth, the thought of ignorance," meaning they thought that the Prophet would be killed and that the religion would vanish. "They say, 'Is there anything for us in the matter?'" meaning, 'do we have any authority in this matter?' "Say, 'Indeed, the matter belongs entirely to Allah.'" They hide within themselves what they do not reveal to you. They say, "'If we had had any authority in the matter, we would not have been killed right here.'" "Say, 'Even if you had been inside your houses, those who were decreed to be killed would have come out to their places of death,'" meaning the place where their skins would be shed. "And so that Allah might test what is in your chests and purify what is in your hearts, and Allah is knowing of that within the chests." [Verse 155]: "Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two hosts met, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned," meaning because of their past sins. "But Allah has already pardoned them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing."
