His saying: "O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul" [meaning: Adam, "and created from it its mate" meaning: Hawwa' (Eve)]. Qatadah said: He created her from one of his shortest ribs. Mujahid said: From his left side.
Yahya [narrated] from al-Hasan ibn Dinar, from al-Hasan al-Basri, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, woman was created from a rib, and if you seek to straighten the rib, you will break it; so treat her with kindness, and you will live with her." قَوْله: ﴿يَا أَيهَا النَّاسُ اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ من نفس وَاحِدَة﴾ [يَعْنِي: آدم ﴿وَخَلَقَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا﴾ يَعْنِي: حَوَّاء] قَالَ قَتَادَة: خلقهَا من ضلع من أضلاعه القصيراء. وَقَالَ [مُجَاهِد: من جنبه الْأَيْسَر.
