(And worship God), meaning: and observe the rights of God. (And associate nothing with Him), meaning: do not equate anything else with Him. (And do good to parents), (and the neighbor who is near of kin), who has a family relationship, (and the neighbor who is a stranger), the foreigner who has no family relationship. (And the companion by your side), meaning: the traveling companion, according to the exegesis of Ibn Jubayr. Others said: It means: the wife.
Muhammad said: It was said regarding the neighbor who is a stranger: that he is the foreigner, and al-janabah (strangeness) in the language is:
﴿واعبدوا الله﴾ يَعْنِي: واحفظوا الله ﴿وَلا تُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئا﴾ أَي: لَا تعدلوا بِهِ غَيره ﴿وبالوالدين إحسانا﴾ ﴿وَالْجَار ذِي الْقُرْبَى﴾ الَّذِي لَهُ قرَابَة ﴿وَالْجَارِ الْجُنُبِ﴾ الْأَجْنَبِيّ الَّذِي لَيست لَهُ قرَابَة. ﴿والصاحب بالجنب﴾ يَعْنِي: الرفيق فِي السّفر، فِي تَفْسِير ابْن جُبَيْر. وَقَالَ غَيره: يَعْنِي: الْمَرْأَة.
قَالَ مُحَمَّد: وَقيل: فِي الْجَار الْجنب: إِنَّه الْغَرِيب، والجنابة فِي اللُّغَة:
