"Or do they envy the people for what Allah has given them of His bounty?" Al-Kalbi said: The "people" in this verse refers to the Prophet ﷺ. The Jews said: Look at this man who is never satisfied with food, and by Allah, he has no concern other than women. They envied him for the abundance of his wives and criticized him for that. They said: If he were a prophet, he would not have desired a multitude of women. So Allah proved them liars, saying: "We had already given the family of..."
