"And indeed, among you is he who would surely linger"—that is, from military expeditions and jihad, according to the tafsir of al-Hasan.
Muhammad said: "He would surely linger" (layubatti'anna) means he lags behind. It is said: 'abta'a al-rajul' (the man lagged behind) when he is delayed, and 'bat'u' when he becomes slothful. "If a disaster befalls you," meaning a calamity, "he says, 'Allah has favored me, for I was not a witness with them,'" meaning present.
