from it, as compensation," meaning: no ransom shall be accepted from it. "Nor shall they be helped," meaning: there is no one who will come to their aid.

Muhammad said: Compensation is called 'adl because it is an equivalent for the thing; it is said: 'This is the 'adl (equivalent) of this' and 'adiluhu (its counterpart). The word 'idl—with a kasrah on the 'ayn—is what is carried upon the back.

مِنْهَا عدل﴾ أَي: لَا يقبل مِنْهَا فدَاء ﴿وَلَا هم ينْصرُونَ﴾ أَي: لَا أحد ينتصر لَهُم.

قَالَ مُحَمَّد: إِنَّمَا يُقَال للْفِدَاء: عدل؛ لِأَنَّهُ مثل للشَّيْء؛ يُقَال: هَذَا عدل هَذَا وعديله؛ والْعِدْلُ - بِكَسْر الْعين - هُوَ: مَا حُمِلَ على الظّهْر.
