"Those who take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers." They were aligning themselves with the Jews, while they had manifested faith. "Do they seek with Allah honor?" That is: Do they seek honor through them?!
﴿الَّذِينَ يَتَّخِذُونَ الْكَافِرِينَ أَوْلِيَاءَ مِنْ دون الْمُؤمنِينَ﴾ كَانُوا يتولون الْيَهُود، وَقد أظهرُوا الْإِيمَان. ﴿أيبتغون عِنْد الله الْعِزَّة﴾ أَي: أيريدون بهم الْعِزَّة؟!
