"And there is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in him before his death." Qatadah said: This means before the death of Isa (Jesus) when he descends.
Al-Suddi said: He says that no one among them will die until he believes in Isa, that he is the slave of Allah and His Messenger, but that will not avail him when he witnesses the angel of death.
﴿وَإِنْ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ إِلا ليُؤْمِنن بِهِ قبل مَوته﴾ قَالَ قَتَادَة: يَعْنِي: قبل موت عِيسَى إِذَا نزل.
وَقَالَ السّديّ: يَقُولُ لَا يَمُوت مِنْهُم أحد حتَّى يُؤمن بِعِيسَى؛ أَنَّهُ عَبْد الله وَرَسُوله، فَلَا يَنْفَعهُ ذَلِكَ عِنْد مُعَاينَة ملك الْمَوْت.
