"Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], as We revealed to Noah and the prophets after him. And We revealed to Abraham," meaning: and as We revealed to Abraham, "and Ishmael," up to His saying: "and the Descendants (al-Asbat)." Al-Asbat refers to Joseph and his brothers. "And We gave David a scripture (Zabur)," meaning: a book. David lived between Moses and Jesus, and there is no [legislation of] lawful or unlawful in the Zabur; it consists only of praising, glorifying, and magnifying Allah.
﴿إِنَّا أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ كَمَا أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَى نُوحٍ وَالنَّبِيِّينَ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ وأوحينا إِلَى إِبْرَاهِيم﴾ أَي: وكما أَوْحَينَا إِلَى إِبْرَاهِيم ﴿وَإِسْمَاعِيل﴾ إِلَى قَوْله: ﴿والأسباط﴾ والأسباط: يُوسُف وَإِخْوَته. ﴿وَآتَيْنَا دَاوُدَ زَبُورًا﴾ يَعْنِي: كتابا؛ وَكَانَ دَاوُد بَين مُوسَى وَعِيسَى، وَلَيْسَ فِي الزبُور حَلَال وَلَا حرَام، وَإِنَّمَا هُوَ تحميد وتمجيد وتعظيم لله.
