"O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion." Ghulu (excess/extremism): is overstepping the truth.
His saying: "And His word which He bestowed upon Mary and a soul from Him," meaning: that he (Jesus) was without human intervention. "So believe in Allah and His messengers and do not say, 'Three,'"—to the end of the verse—meaning: our gods are three. "Desist—it is better for you." "Indeed, Allah is but one God." Muhammad (the author) said: There is a difference of opinion regarding His saying: "Better for you." The preferred view is that it is understood according to its meaning, as if He said: Desist and do what is better for you. Likewise, His saying: "So believe—it is better for you," is according to this same meaning.
