[Verse 60] "And when Moses asked for water for his people, so We said: Strike the stone with your staff, and there gushed forth from it twelve springs; each people knew its drinking place." Qatada said: This was while they were in the wilderness. They complained to Moses of thirst, so they were given water from a stone that Moses, peace be upon him, would carry [with him] from Mount Tur. Whenever they would encamp, Moses would strike it with his staff, and twelve springs would gush forth from it, one for each tribe.

Muhammad said: The meaning of "al-sibt" (the tribe) in the language is: the group that descends from a single father. "Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not commit abuse." Qatada said: Meaning, do not travel in the land as corrupters.

Muhammad said: It is said: "athiya" (to be corrupt) which is "athyan", and "atha" which is "uthuwwan", and "atha" which is "aythan"; they all have the same meaning, which is to hasten in the corruption of something. From this is the saying of Adi ibn al-Riqa':

(Were it not for shyness, and that my head has been corrupted... by gray hair, I would have visited Umm al-Qasim)
