"[I said this] so that he may know that I did not betray him in his absence." When this reached Joseph, he said, "That is so that he [the Aziz] may know that I did not betray him in his absence." The King was above the Aziz. "And that God does not guide the treachery of the treacherous." Al-Suddi said: Meaning, He does not make the work of adulterers succeed. When Joseph said this, Gabriel said to him—in what is mentioned regarding their (inclinations/thoughts)—"O Joseph, what did you do about the trousers?" Joseph replied, "And I do not acquit my own self," [up to] the verse.
﴿لِيَعْلَمَ أَنِّي لَمْ أَخُنْهُ بِالْغَيْبِ﴾ لَمَّا بَلَغَ يُوسُفَ ذَلِكَ قَالَ: ﴿ذَلِك ليعلم﴾ الْعَزِيزُ ﴿أَنِّي لَمْ أَخُنْهُ بِالْغَيْبِ﴾ وَكَانَ الْمَلِكُ فَوْقَ الْعَزِيزِ ﴿وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَهْدِي كَيْدَ الْخَائِنِينَ﴾ قَالَ السُّدِّيُّ: يَعْنِي: لَا يُصْلِحُ عَمَلَ الزُّنَاةِ، فَلَمَّا قَالَ هَذَا يُوسُفُ، قَالَ لَهُ جِبْرِيلُ - فِيمَا ذُكِرَ مِنْ (هَمِّهِمْ) يَا يُوسُفُ، فَمَا فَعَلْتَ السَّرَاوِيلَ؟ فَقَالَ يُوسُفُ: ﴿وَمَا (ل ١٥٦﴾ أبرئ نَفسِي﴾ الْآيَة.
