"They said, 'If he steals, a brother of his has stolen before.'" They meant Joseph. His maternal grandfather used to worship idols, and his mother said to him, "O Joseph, go and take the basket containing my father's idols." He did so and brought it to his mother. That was the theft they intended. "But Joseph kept it secret within himself and did not reveal it to them. He said, 'You are worse in position'" than the one to whom you are saying this. Qatadah said: This statement, "You are worse in position," is what he kept secret within himself and did not reveal to them, and this is among the words that precede the meaning, "And Allah is most knowing of what you describe," meaning: it is a lie.
