"Have they then felt secure"—meaning: the polytheists—"that there will come to them an overwhelming [calamity] of the punishment of Allah?" He says this as an interrogation, meaning: that they are not secure. "Or that the Hour will come upon them suddenly"—meaning: unexpectedly—"while they are unaware," meaning: heedless, that is: those upon whom the Hour will be established with punishment.
Surah Yusuf from verse (108) to verse (111).
﴿أفأمنوا﴾ يَعْنِي: الْمُشْرِكِينَ ﴿أَنْ تَأْتِيَهُمْ غَاشِيَةٌ من عَذَاب الله﴾ يَقُولُ هَذَا عَلَى الاسْتِفَهَامِ؛ أَيْ: بِأَنَّهُمْ لَيْسُوا بِآمِنِينَ ﴿أَوْ تَأْتِيَهُمُ السَّاعَة بَغْتَة﴾ فَجْأَة ﴿وهم لَا يَشْعُرُونَ﴾ أَيْ: غَافِلُونَ؛ يَعْنِي: الَّذِينَ تَقُومُ عَلَيْهِم السَّاعَة بِالْعَذَابِ.
