"And it is He who spread the earth," meaning: He expanded it. "And placed therein firm mountains," meaning: the mountains. "And rivers, and of all the fruits He made therein," meaning: He created therein, "two pairs," meaning: two kinds.
Muhammad said: It is said that this means: two types, sweet and sour. The term "pair" (zawj) according to the linguists refers to: a single thing that has a counterpart.
"He causes the night to cover the day," meaning: He causes the night to cloak the day, thereby making it disappear. "Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought," and they are the believers.
Surah Ar-Ra'd from verse (4) to verse (5).
﴿وَهُوَ الَّذِي مد الأَرْض﴾ أَيْ: بَسَطَهَا ﴿وَجَعَلَ فِيهَا رَوَاسِيَ﴾ يَعْنِي: الْجِبَالَ ﴿وَأَنْهَارًا وَمِنْ كُلِّ الثمرات جعل فِيهَا﴾ أَيْ: خَلَقَ فِيهَا ﴿زَوْجَيْنِ اثْنَيْنِ﴾ أَيْ: صِنْفَيْنِ.
قَالَ محمدٌ: قِيلَ: إِنَّهُ يَعْنِي: نَوْعَيْنِ: حُلْوًا وَحَامِضًا، وَالزَّوْجُ عِنْدَ أَهْلِ اللُّغَةِ: الْوَاحِدُ الَّذِي لَهُ قَرِينٌ.
﴿يُغْشِي اللَّيْلَ النَّهَار﴾ أَيْ: يُلْبِسُ اللَّيْلَ النَّهَارَ فَيُذْهِبُهُ ﴿إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَاتٍ لقومٍ يتفكرون﴾ وهم الْمُؤْمِنُونَ.
