"And if there were a Qur'an by which mountains could be moved, or the earth could be torn asunder, or the dead could be made to speak." The interpretation of Qatadah: It was mentioned to us that the Quraysh said to the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him): If it pleases you that we follow you, then move the mountains of Tihamah for us, and expand our sanctuary for us so that we may acquire plots of land to earn a living in, or bring back to life for us so-and-so, and so-and-so, and so-and-so—referring to people who had died in the Pre-Islamic period (Jahiliyyah). So Allah revealed this verse, saying: If this were to be done by any Qur'an, it would have been done by your Qur'an.
﴿وَلَو أَن قُرْآنًا سُيِّرَتْ بِهِ الْجِبَالُ أَوْ قُطِّعَتْ بِهِ الأَرْضُ أَوْ كُلِّمَ بِهِ الْمَوْتَى﴾ تَفْسِير قَتَادَة: ذكر لنا أَن قُرَيْشًا قَالَتْ لِنَبِيِّ اللَّهِ ﷺ:
إِنْ سَرَّكَ أَنْ نَتَّبِعَكَ فَسَيِّرْ لَنَا جِبَالَ تُهَامَةَ، وَزِدْ لَنَا فِي حَرَمِنَا؛ حَتَّى نَتَّخِذَ قَطَائِعَ نَحْتَرِفَ فِيهَا، أَو أُمِّي لَنَا فُلانًا وَفُلانًا وَفُلانًا - لأُنَاسٍ مَاتُوا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ؛ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ، يَقُولُ: لَوْ فُعِلَ هَذَا بِقُرْآنٍ غَيْرِ قُرْآنِكُمْ فُعِلَ بِقُرْآنِكُمْ.
