"And when Abraham said, 'My Lord, make this city secure'" meaning: Mecca, "and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols."
Muhammad said: The people of the Hijaz say: "Jannabani fulanun sharrahu" (So-and-so kept his evil away from me), while the people of Najd say: "Ajnabani wa jannabani"; meaning: He placed me on the side of it (or removed me from it).
﴿وَإِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ رَبِّ اجْعَل هَذَا الْبَلَد آمنا﴾ يَعْنِي: مَكَّةَ ﴿وَاجْنُبْنِي وَبَنِيَّ أَنْ نعْبد الْأَصْنَام﴾.
قَالَ محمدٌ: أهل الْحجاز يَقُولُونَ: جَنَّبْنِي فلانٌ شَرَّهُ، وَأَهْلُ نَجْدٍ يَقُولُونَ: أَجْنَبَنِي وَجَنَّبَنِي؛ أَيْ: جَعَلَنِي جانباً مِنْهُ.
