[And the evil consequences of what they did struck them]—the recompense for what they did—[and what they used to mock enveloped them], meaning: the recompense for what they used to mock regarding the signs of Allah and the messengers.
﴿فَأَصَابَهُمْ سيئات مَا عمِلُوا﴾ ثَوَابَ مَا عَمِلُوا ﴿وَحَاقَ بِهِمْ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ يستهزئون﴾ أَيْ: ثَوَابُ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ يستهزئون بآيَات الله وبالرسل.
