"He hides himself from the people because of the evil of what he has been given news of; [wondering] whether he should keep it in humiliation or bury it in the dust." He says: He ponders over how he should deal with what he has been given news of; should he keep it—meaning the daughter—in humiliation, or should he bury her alive until she dies out of fear of poverty? "Unquestionably, evil is what they judge." This is a parable Allah has set forth for them regarding their saying: The angels are the daughters of Allah.
﴿يَتَوَارَى مِنَ الْقَوْمِ مِنْ سُوءِ مَا بُشِّرَ بِهِ أَيُمْسِكُهُ عَلَى هُونٍ أَمْ يَدُسُّهُ فِي التُّرَابِ﴾ يَقُولُ: يَتَفَكَّرُ كَيْفَ يَصْنَعُ بِمَا بُشِّرَ بِهِ؛ أَيُمْسِكُهُ عَلَى هوانٍ - يَعْنِي: الابْنَةَ - أَمْ يَدْفِنُهَا حَيَّةً حَتَّى تَمُوتَ مَخَافَةَ الْفَاقَةِ ﴿أَلا سَاءَ﴾ بئس ﴿مَا يحكمون﴾ وَهَذَا مثلٌ ضَرَبَهُ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ فِي قَوْلِهِمْ: الْمَلائِكَةُ بَنَاتُ اللَّهِ.
