"Whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief, except for one who is forced, while his heart is secure in faith"—meaning: content with it. This was revealed concerning 'Ammar ibn Yasir and his companions; the polytheists seized them and compelled them to disbelieve in Allah and His Messenger, so they feared them and gave them what they wanted with their mouths.
﴿مِنْ كَفَرَ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ إِيمَانِهِ إِلا مَنْ أُكْرِهَ وَقَلْبُهُ مُطْمَئِنٌّ بِالْإِيمَان﴾ أَيْ: راضٍ بِهِ؛ نَزَلَتْ فِي عَمَّارِ بْنِ يَاسِرٍ وَأَصْحَابِهِ؛ أَخَذَهُمُ الْمُشْرِكُونَ، وَوَقَفُوهُمْ عَلَى الْكُفْرِ بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ، فَخَافُوا مِنْهُمْ؛ فَأَعْطَوْهُمْ ذَلِكَ بأفواههم.
