"And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening." Al-Hasan said: Meaning, the prayer of Makkah, when the prayer consisted of two rak'ahs in the morning and two rak'ahs in the evening, before the five daily prayers were made obligatory.
Qatadah said:
Some people said to the Messenger of Allah: "If it pleases you that we follow you, then drive away from us so-and-so, and so-and-so, and so-and-so"—referring to people who were below them in worldly status, whom the polytheists looked down upon—and so He revealed...
﴿وَلا تَطْرُدِ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَدَاةِ والعشي﴾ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ: يَعْنِي: صَلَاةَ مَكَّةَ؛ حِينَ كَانَتِ الصَّلَاةُ رَكْعَتَيْنِ غَدْوَةً، وَرَكْعَتَيْنِ عَشِيَّةً، قَبْلَ أَنْ تُفْتَرَضَ الصَّلَوَاتُ الْخَمْسُ.
قَالَ قَتَادَةُ:
قَالَ قَائِلُونَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ: إِنْ سَرَّكَ أَنْ نَتَّبِعَكَ، فَاطْرُدْ عَنَّا فُلَانًا وَفُلَانًا وَفُلَانًا - لِأُنَاسٍ كَانُوا دُونَهُمْ [فِي الدُّنْيَا] ازْدَرَاهُمُ الْمُشْرِكُونَ فَأَنْزَلَ
