"Say, 'Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you invoke other than Allah'" meaning: the idols.
"Say, 'I will not follow your inclinations'" in the worship of idols, "'for I would then have gone astray, and I would not be among the guided.'"
﴿قُلْ إِنِّي نُهِيتُ أَنْ أَعْبُدَ الَّذِينَ تَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ﴾ يَعْنِي: الْأَوْثَانَ.
﴿قُلْ لَا أَتَّبِعُ أهواءكم﴾ فِي عِبَادَةِ الْأَوْثَانِ ﴿قَدْ ضَلَلْتُ إِذا﴾ إِنِ اتَّبَعْتُ أَهْوَاءَكُمْ ﴿وَمَا أَنَا من المهتدين﴾
