"Say: He is the One able to send upon you a torment from above you, or from beneath your feet, or to confuse you into factions, and to make some of you taste the violence of others." (Folio 95) Al-Hasan's explanation regarding His saying: "A torment from above you," means that He may pelt you with stones as He pelted the people of Lot, or with some of the other torments that descend. "Or from beneath your feet," meaning: by means of the earth collapsing (khasf) or by an earthquake (rajfa). "Or to confuse you into factions," meaning: disagreement.
"And to make some of you taste the violence of others," meaning: that some of you kill others.
﴿قُلْ هُوَ الْقَادِرُ عَلَى أَنْ يَبْعَثَ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابًا مِنْ فَوْقِكُمْ أَوْ مِنْ تَحْتِ أَرْجُلِكُمْ أَوْ يَلْبِسَكُمْ شِيَعًا وَيُذِيقَ بَعْضَكُمْ بَأْسَ بعض﴾ (ل ٩٥) تَفْسِيرُ الْحَسَنِ فِي قَوْلِهِ: ﴿عَذَابًا من فَوْقكُم﴾ فَيَحْصِبَكُمْ بِالْحِجَارَةِ كَمَا حَصَبَ قَوْمَ لُوطٍ، أَوْ بِبَعْضِ مَا يَنْزِلُ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ ﴿أَوْ مِنْ تَحْتِ أَرْجُلكُم﴾ أَي: بخسف أَو برجفةٍ ﴿أَو يلْبِسكُمْ شيعًا﴾ يَعْنِي: اخْتِلَافًا.
﴿وَيُذِيقَ بَعْضَكُمْ بَأْسَ بعض﴾ أَي: فَيقْتل بَعْضكُم بَعْضًا
