a single nun, there was no way to add [another]; so they intensified the nun so that the omitted [nun] would be assimilated. He said: Those who disliked the intensification—as we see it—did so to avoid the confluence of two quiescent letters, namely the waw and the intensified nun, so they dropped [the nun].
His saying: "My Lord encompasses all things in knowledge," Qatada said: Meaning, my Lord has filled [all things].
نُونٍ وَاحِدَةٍ، لَمْ يَكُنْ إِلَى الزِّيَادَةِ سَبِيلٌ؛ فَثَقَّلُوا النُّونَ؛ لِتَكُونَ الْمَتْرُوكَةُ مُدْغَمَةً. قَالَ: وَإِنَّمَا كَرِهَ التَّثْقِيلَ مَنْ كَرِهَهُ - فِيمَا نَرَى - لِلْجَمْعِ بَيْنَ السَّاكِنَيْنِ؛ وَهِيَ الْوَاوُ وَالنُّونُ الْمُدْغَمَةُ فَحَذَفُوهَا.
قَوْلُهُ: ﴿وَسِعَ رَبِّي كل شيءٍ علما﴾ قَالَ قَتَادَةُ: يَعْنِي: مَلَأَ رَبِّي.
