"And even if We had sent down the angels to them, and the dead had spoken to them, and We had gathered together all things before them," meaning: visibly. "they would not have believed." Al-Hasan said: This was when they said, 'Bring forth our dead to us so that we may ask them: is what you say the truth or is it false?' And due to their saying: 'Why have the angels not been sent down to us?' and their saying: 'Or you bring Allah and the angels before us.' He says: If We had done this for them [when they see it] visibly, "they would not have believed, unless Allah should will, but most of them are ignorant."
﴿وَلَوْ أَنَّنَا نَزَّلْنَا إِلَيْهِمُ الْمَلائِكَةَ وَكَلَّمَهُمُ الْمَوْتَى وَحَشَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ كُلَّ شيءٍ قبلا﴾
يَعْنِي: عَيَانًا ﴿مَا كَانُوا لِيُؤْمِنُوا﴾ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ: [هَذَا] حِينَ قَالُوا: ابْعَثْ لَنَا مَوْتَانَا نَسْأَلْهُمْ أحقٌّ مَا تَقُولُ أَمْ بَاطِلٌ؟ وَلِقَوْلِهِمْ: ﴿لَوْلَا أنزل علينا الْمَلَائِكَة﴾ وَلِقَوْلِهِمْ: ﴿أَوْ تَأْتِيَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْمَلائِكَةِ قبيلا﴾ يَقُولُ: لَوْ فَعَلْنَا هَذَا بِهِمْ [حِين: يرونه] (ل ٩٩) عِيَانًا ﴿مَا كَانُوا لِيُؤْمِنُوا إِلا أَنْ يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ يجهلون﴾
