His saying: "Or is one who was dead and We gave him life," Al-Hasan said: Meaning, through Islam. "And We made for him light by which he walks among the people, as one whose likeness is in the darkness," meaning: the darkness of disbelief, "never to emerge from it," i.e., he is confounded within it.
"Are they equal in example?" meaning: they are not equal.
قَوْله: ﴿أَو من كَانَ مَيتا فأحييناه﴾ قَالَ الْحَسَنُ: يَعْنِي: بِالْإِسْلَامِ ﴿وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُ نُورًا يَمْشِي بِهِ فِي النَّاسِ كَمَنْ مَثَلُهُ فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ﴾ يَعْنِي: ظُلُمَاتِ الْكُفْرِ ﴿لَيْسَ بِخَارِجٍ مِنْهَا﴾ أَيْ: هُوَ مُتَحَيِّرٌ فِيهَا.
﴿هَلْ يستويان مثلا﴾ أَيْ: أَنَّهُمَا لَا يَسْتَوِيَانِ.
