"Take what is easily accessible," Mujahid said: He means: take what is easily accessible of the characters and deeds of the people without [inquisition].
Muhammad said: "The easy" (al-'afw) in the speech of the Arabs is that which is brought without hardship.
"And enjoin what is right (al-'urf)," meaning: what is ma'ruf (known/good). "And turn away from the ignorant," meaning: the polytheists.
His saying: "Turn away" is abrogated; it was abrogated by the command to fight.
﴿خُذ الْعَفو﴾ قَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ: يَقُولُ: خُذِ الْعَفْوَ مِنْ أَخْلاقِ النَّاسِ وَأَعْمَالِهِمْ بِغَيْرِ [تحسسٍ].
قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: الْعَفْوُ فِي كَلامِ الْعَرَبِ: مَا أُتِيَ بِغَيْرِ كلفةٍ.
﴿وَأمر بِالْعرْفِ﴾ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ ﴿وَأعْرض عَن الْجَاهِلين﴾ يَعْنِي: الْمُشْركين.
وَقَوله: ﴿أعرض﴾ منسوخٌ، نسخه الْقِتَال.
