[After it had become clear] to them. Al-Hasan said: He is telling them this after Allah had informed them that they would be victorious.
(116) [As if they were being driven to death while they were looking on.] Muhammad said: In their going out to battle, it was as if they were being driven to death, due to their small number and the fact that they were on foot.
It was narrated that there were only two horsemen among them, so they were afraid.
﴿بَعْدَ مَا تبين﴾ لَهُمْ، قَالَ الْحَسَنُ: يَقُولُ لَهُمْ بَعْدَ مَا أَخْبَرَهُمُ اللَّهُ أَنَّهُمْ مَنْصُورُونَ.
(١١٦) ﴿كَأَنَّمَا يُسَاقُونَ إِلَى الْمَوْتِ وهم ينظرُونَ﴾ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ: كَانُوا فِي خُرُوجِهِمْ إِلَى الْقِتَالِ كَأَنَّمَا يُسَاقَوْنَ إِلَى الْمَوْتِ؛ لِقِلَّةِ عَدَدِهِمْ وَأَنَّهُمْ رَجَّالَةٌ.
وَرُوِيَ أَنَّهُ إِنَّمَا كَانَ فِيهِمْ فارسان فخافوا.
