Qatadah said: "The two parties were: one of them, Abu Sufyan, who was approaching with the caravan from the Levant, and the other party was Abu Jahl, who was with the mobilization of the Quraysh. The Muslims disliked fighting and preferred to seize the caravan, but Allah willed what He willed."

"And Allah intends to establish the truth by His words," meaning: by His promise which He made regarding victory.

"And to eliminate the disbelievers," meaning: the root of the disbelievers.
